Tasting Note

'Bryan Deleu’s Saint-Joseph “Exorde” bottling hails from a pair of vineyards, with seventy percent of the blend hailing from forty year-old syrah vines in the village of Malleval. The balance is from the neighboring village of Serrières, with both communes in the far northern reaches of the appellation. The bunches are completely destemmed and the wine is raised in a combination of older demi-muids and foudres. The 2022 version comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane and offers up a deep and classy bouquet of cassis, pepper, smoked meats, black olive, dark chocolate, a fine base of granitic soil tones and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very well balanced, with a fine core of fruit, good soil signature and grip, moderate tannins and lovely length and grip on the suave finish. This does not have the underlying mineral drive one finds from Saint-Joseph from the heart of the appellation around Tournon and Mauves, but it is excellent wine and will not demand long-term cellaring before it will drink with generosity. Fine juice.'
