Tasting Note

'The Roty vines in Fontenys may well be the oldest still extant parcel of pinot noir vines in all of Burgundy, as they were planted prior to records being kept, which in Gevrey started in 1870! The 2004 Fontenys is a brilliant bottle of premier cru in the making, as the wine offers up a superb bouquet of black cherries, plums, woodsmoke, mustard seed, licorice, a great base of soil and a bit of toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and long, with stunning purity, outstanding complexity, bright acids and moderate tannins on the long, soil-driven finish. I am accustomed to the Roty Fontenys being very closed and almost brooding when young, and yet this 2004 seems almost drinkable in comparison to many recent vintages of this wine that I have tasted. Perhaps it will close down more seriously with a bit more bottle age, but at the present time, this looks like a superb vintage of Fontenys that will drink well relatively early on '
