Pierre Gonon St Joseph 2021 (OCC/12)
Tasting Note
'quite a dark red colour; the nose has a stylish aroma led by cassis coulis, plus licorice, the fruit very neatly lined up, discreet iron in the background. The palate has a well juiced debut, goes off and running, is well assembled, on the money, authentic, with good ferrous tones, fruit with purpose and mild tannins on the inside, is a road runner, with the second half a bit more serious. It’s ample from within, provides entertainment, has a good long stride, serves energy from this free vintage, can be drunk now, has a pretty finish. “What saved us was its raising – the harvest wasn’t necessarily fully ripe, but the grapes had completed their course, and didn’t have the pink interiors of some past years when the harvest wasn’t that ripe after all; the rain diluted, the grapes were at the end of their route, so the tannins were OK. We had hail on 29 september, before rot, so a lot of discarding had to be done. We lowered the proportion of whole bunches, perhaps kept 60%,”'
